How to Style Your Coffee Table

Coffee tables are often the centerpiece of a home, and one of my favorite surfaces to style within a home. Coffee table decor sets the tone for your space, serving as the focal point of your living room design, den, or family room. Complimenting both the interior style and functionality of your surrounding furniture and decor, coffee tables play a big part in a room's design. We’re often asked how to style a coffee table — and today’s the day! We’ve got answers.

Sourcing the Perfect Piece For Your Home

Embracing your cherished, time-worn table or wanting to source a modern coffee table? Either way, your coffee table is the perfect opportunity to showcase your personal style. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for as you are sourcing:

  • Size and Shape: Ensure you have a good understanding of what the configuration of your seating will be. Make sure you have the space and know what you need to fill. For example, a square coffee table fits nicely with a traditional L-shaped sectional, whereas a smaller space with a curved sofa pairs better with a round coffee table or a nested coffee table set.

  • Color and Material: Look for natural materials like wood, stone, or marble. They age gracefully and are suitable for any living space. Stick with neutral colors — darker tones create a grounded feel, while lighter tones open up your living space.

  • Placement and Size: Your coffee table should be about the same height as your sofa or slightly shorter so that it ideally covers half to two-thirds of your sofa’s length. Additionally, allow around 18 inches of space between your coffee table and couch for comfortable legroom.

  • Storage Options: Tables with hidden storage, like ottomans or nested designs, offer both beauty and practicality. Add trays to organize television remotes, books, and other essentials.

Styling Your Table

Once you’ve found your coffee table, the fun begins. It’s time to decorate!

  • Layers: If you’re wondering where to begin, start with the base layer. Typically, base pieces are larger decor items that balance function and beauty. Consider using a large decorative tray, bowl, or a stack of coffee table books that can serve as a foundation for styling pieces.

  • Accents: Over the years, I’ve had so much fun getting creative styling my treasured coffee table. I love incorporating decor that feels meaningful and engaging. Coffee table accents like vintage boxes, organic objects, or candle holders help give it a personal, finishing touch. I’ve sourced many of my coffee table accents from the Round Top Antique Fair. here in Austin, Texas.

  • Textures: Think large vessels filled with natural greenery or curated gemstones for a fun accent. There’s so much personality and variety to explore when mixing textures. Adding height with floral stems is a surefire way to make your table feel balanced. Just ensure they’re positioned to maintain the visual flow of the room.

Styling for Every Season

To keep your table looking fresh year-round, update it with seasonal accents. Swap items like candles, florals, or decorative bowls to reflect the current season. For instance, use pinecones or cozy candles in winter and fresh flowers in spring. Small seasonal changes can transform the feel of your space without a full overhaul.

Coffee Table Styling for Entertaining

Hosting friends or family? Use your coffee table as a functional centerpiece for gatherings. A tray filled with snacks or a charcuterie board makes entertaining effortless and chic. Add vintage style coasters and linen napkins to ensure guests feel comfortable while keeping your setup organized.

Considering all the details, my best advice is to choose items that feel authentic to you—if it speaks to your home decor style, embrace it!
